History...

Wintermans started his own cigar-making business over 100 years ago.

Henri Wintermans was born in the Dutch village of Duizel in 1886. He lived comfortably for the early part of his life, but then fate intervened.

His mother died suddenly and at the age of 15, and one of nine children who found themselves destitute, Henri was forced to leave school and start working. He found employment rolling cigars.

He had a talent for it, and after just three years he and his brother Sjaak opened their first factory and named the business A. Wintermans & Sons, in honour of their father.

With Sjaak concentrating on sales and Henri on buying tobacco and blending it, the business thrived. While other cigar makers went to the wall, Wintermans started to dominate the home market.

But by 1934 the brothers agreed it was time for a change. They split the company and Henri moved his part of the business to Eersel, site of today's factory, and brought in his son Adriaan - named after his grandfather and the same age as Henri when he took over his first factory to help him develop opportunities in the booming export sector.

So it was that Henri Wintermans was born.

Adriaan took over the business in 1945 but Henri never quite walked away from a life in cigars, and would appear at the factory regularly right up until his death in 1975, aged 89. The company has, of course, thrived ever since, and as we started a new millennium its annual sales passed one billion cigars for the first time. Henri Wintermans cigars are sold in more than 100 countries and the company is the biggest seller of cigars in the world.

The changes to Henri Wintermans famed Red Range are being made at all levels, starting with the name. To emphasise the heritage of the cigars and to recognise the pioneering spirit that marked that first foray in cigar making, the range has been rebranded Henri Wintermans Founder's Blend.

The product itself -made from the finest Cuban, Indonesian and Brazilian leaves and blended to the highest standards perfected over the years - remains unchanged.
